Associate professor (non-tenure track) in electrochemistry

The LUT School of Engineering Science is looking for an associate professor (non-tenure track) in electrochemistry

The position is hosted by the Department of Separation Science, which is the largest and most versatile academic research unit focusing on separation technologies in Finland. The department employs approximately 100 researchers covering e.g. adsorption, membrane separation, solid/liquid separation, gas separation, extraction, oxidation and chromatography. Application areas range from mining and mineral processing to biorefining and wastewater treatment. The department operates across three locations in Finland: Lappeenranta, Lahti and Mikkeli. It has state-of-the-art laboratories and collaborates closely with industry.

We are now looking for an associate professor (non-tenure track) to work in electrochemistry related to battery applications. The associate professor will be working under the supervision of Associate Professor (tenure track) Eveliina Repo, whose research focuses on hydrometallurgy, urban mining approaches and material development for metal recovery.

The position will focus on electrochemical reactions exploited especially in battery technologies and the development of new battery technologies. Applicants are invited to describe their research ambitions in the material they submit for this position.

Applicants to this position are expected to have a doctoral degree in a field relevant to the position, such as D.Sc. or Ph.D. in chemical engineering, chemistry or material science. The work involves conducting independent research and publishing on it in high quality journals, attracting external competitive funding in the role of PI, and teaching on courses. Supervision of Bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral theses is included in the work description, and thus, docentships are considered an asset. Docentships can also be applied for in the position, but sufficient research merits are nonetheless required for the application to be successful. With the build-up of external funding, the associate professor is expected to put together a research group and be its formal supervisor. The selected candidate is expected to be highly motivated to carry out research addressing new battery technologies, to be creative and courageous in proposing new research ideas and to be able to work with experts from multiple fields both nationally and abroad.

In addition, the regulations of LUT University require that an associate professor (non-tenure track) has the pedagogical competences and teaching skills necessary for the position, proof of high-level research work and publications, and the ability to lead a research group and raise research funding.

To be successful in the position, fluency in English is required. Mastering the Finnish language or a credible plan to achieve mastery of the Finnish language are considered assets.

The employment relationship is fixed-term for four years with a six-month trial period. If the associate professor’s work progresses as expected, the position can be made permanent through an external evaluation. The external evaluation is initiated 4–6 months prior to the end of the fixed-term employment.

The annual salary range of an associate professor (non-tenure track) is approximately 53 400–80 200 euros (gross income excluding holiday bonus) depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidate and the agreed responsibilities in the position.

The position is located in Lappeenranta, and the work will start on 1 October or as agreed with the employer.

The deadline for applications is 15 August 2021 at midnight, Finnish local time (UTC +3 h). Please submit your application together with the required attachments through the university's online application system. Only applications submitted via the electronic system will be considered.

Please fill out the online application form and attach the following documents:

  • A curriculum vitae (max. 10 pages)
  • A copy of your doctoral diploma; if the original document is not in English, Finnish or Swedish, it must be accompanied by an official certified translation into English or Finnish.
  • A full list of publications, including the total number of publications in the Scopus database, the total number of citations, the h-index and Scopus ID. In addition, equivalent information from the applicant’s Google Scholar profile can be included.
  • A description of the research you would seek in the position (max. 3 pages)
