Junior researcher (doctoral student) in welding quality of fossil-free high- and ultra-high-strength steel

The Laboratory of Welding Technology under the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the LUT School of Energy Systems is looking for a junior researcher (doctoral student) in the field of welding quality of fossil-free high- and ultra-high-strength steel (U)HSS joints and components by means of intelligent welding automation, adaptivity and process control. The Laboratory of Welding Technology operates under the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

What we are looking for

The person appointed for this position will focus on examining welding productional and geometrical quality in the context of arc, laser and laser-hybrid welding applications. The aim is to produce high performance capacity and properties for fossil-free (U)HSS weldments via an intelligent welding automation system and material and weldment characterizations utilizing adaptivity and feedback control. Applicants are expected to have a background in either mechanical engineering or information technology – or corresponding field of science. The research deals with welding automation and productivity, modern fusion welding processes and welding metallurgy to produce high-quality welded joints and components. Consequently, knowledge of and experience in robot control systems, welding programming and simulation, and/or the characterization, development and modelling of automation systems and digital tools are considered an advantage for the applicant.

The junior researcher must have a master’s degree (M.Sc. (Tech.) or equivalent) in a relevant field (e.g., mechanical engineering, welding technology, information technology, or similar), and the ability to complete the doctoral degree within the normative duration of the studies for the degree and a right to complete doctoral studies at LUT University. Junior researchers need to obtain the right to complete doctoral studies at LUT within the first three months of their employment relationship.

Employment relationship and pay

The job is located in Lappeenranta. The work will start this autumn (negotiable) with a one-year term that can be extended by three years, provided that the studies and research have progressed satisfactorily. The employment relationship is fixed-term with a six-month trial period.
