Junior researcher (doctoral student) in electrical engineering / superconducting electrical machines

The LUT School of Energy Systems is looking for a junior researcher (doctoral student) to conduct research in the field of superconducting electrical machines. The employee will be part of the research team of the Electric Drives and Power Electronics Laboratory and the duties might also include some teaching related to courses delivered by the Laboratory of Electrical Drives Technology. The post is located at LUT's Lahti campus (Mukkulankatu), and the research work is conducted in close collaboration with local industry. In addition, the work involves international academic collaboration. The preliminary research topic for this position is winding design of high-speed superconducting machines for aircraft propulsion

Applicants must have 1) a master’s degree or the equivalent in a relevant field (e.g., electrical engineering, industrial electronics, electrical machines and drives, power electronics, computational electromagnetism), and 2) the ability to complete the doctoral degree within the normative duration of the studies for the degree and a right to complete doctoral studies at LUT University. Junior researchers need to obtain the right to complete doctoral studies at LUT within the first three months of their employment relationship.

The ideal candidate for the junior researcher position 

  • is interested in research and writing a dissertation on the given topic, 
  • has good writing skills in English, 
  • has strong knowledge of electrical machines, 
  • has basic knowledge of superconductivity, 
  • is a proactive team player.

Employment relationship and pay

The employment starts with a one-year term including a six-month trial period, and it can be extended by three years provided that the studies have progressed satisfactorily in the first year.  

The salary is based on the current collective agreement for Finnish universities. The typical gross starting salary for a junior researcher is approximately 32 500 euros a year (plus a holiday bonus in accordance with the collective agreement).
